I thought id make my Quarterly blog post, a blog about my first experience of co-working. James Corbett of Daynuv originally mentioned the idea of co-working.James has a nice post outlining the background and philosophy of co-working in this blog, thats well worth checking out. After some chats regarding locations, and a chance hello from the Bailey Bar in limerick on twitter,James and myself met up in the bailey bar,for our first day of co-working.
The Bailey bar as a venue is ideal for co-working.It has a nice semi-private area, with adequate seating space, complete with sturdy tables. The wi-fi is free and reliable, and even better the food is good, with excellent service!
I found working there to be very productive, and I was certainly more focused than I would be at home. However,my agenda for the day was to work on my business plan, which I made quiet abit of progress.I think tho as a techie, that for development work,I am very much reliant on my dual screen setup, and other equipment. So for me,co-working in a bar is not a practical everyday choice, but definitely Il use it for days when I need to be creative,or do some paperwork etc
The social element of co-working is definitely the aspect that appeals the most.Whilst it was only James and myself,it was nice to be able to chat in between sessions of work.As James mentions in his post, that co-working is primarily about working.Unlike Fightclub, there are no rules, but James and I,put down some guidelines for co-working to ensure, everyone including the venue management are respected, and that everyone benefits from the arrangement.
One unexpected side benefit of the co-working experience for me,was the potential business co-operation,and business links. After having a chat with James about building some elearning apps for the iPhone platform,he knew of someone in that area, and kindly put in an introduction for me.I may not have gotten this introduction, from within my usual circle of people where my office is based.I hope to return the favour for James too,if I can.
So personally,I will be co-working at least one day a week. While the numbers are small,we will use plancast,as a tool where we can let others know when we plan on co-working.(Add patohora, and James)
Also its important to mention, that co-working is open to anyone.Whether your a freelance accountant,or independent games developer, everyone is welcome. So spread the word!
Anyway, this was just a quick synopsis of my first day of co-working,and overall a very positive experience.Hope to see a few more faces, the next time im in town!
